Whale Watching Trips

Whale Watching

Each year gray whales embark on one of the longest migrations of any mammal. Swimming 6,000 miles from their Arctic feeding grounds, they head south past the California coast to the protected lagoons of Baja. Traveling alone or in groups of up to 12, they reach Baja in six to eight weeks. They may travel 20 hours and 100 miles each day in their urgency to reach the lagoons to bear their young. They return north during the spring to the Arctic; this is when whale cows can be seen accompanied by their newborn calves. The dolphins and sea birds are always an added bonus.

Discover the Farallon Islands/ Whale Watching

In spring and summer nearly a quarter million sea birds nest on stark granite cliffs rising sharply from the Pacific, just 27 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. Nutrient-rich upwellings from the nearby edge of the continental Shelf attract marine life of all kinds to the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary: from tiny plankton, to endangered humpback and blue whales, the largest animals ever to live, plus Dall's porpoise and Pacific white sided or Risso's dolphins. Observe seal lions, Northern elephant seals, harbor seals, perhaps fur seals, plus tufted puffins, pigeon guillemots, rhinoceros auklets, murres, oystercatchers and cormorants.

Trips depart from San Francisco at 8:30am, duration approx. 8 hours via a 63 foot Coast Guard certified, fully insured vessel with open observation decks and enclosed salon (limited indoor seating). Capacity of 49 total passengers.
